About

STUDIO174 was born from a love of gardening in a bush landscape, particularly with tufts and grassland native plants. Selective Tasmanian and mainland Australian species have been used to complement the surrounding local Mount Rumney dry sclerophyll and grassland flora.  Grasses and sedges have become a point of focus in the garden, their linear features creating a structural contrast to the subtle colours and textures of the bush.  A garden is like a sculpture, the plants are the pencils and paints and with changes in light, weather and the seasons, it creates a perpetually changing canvas.

The arrangements I make reflect my interest in the naturally loose visual attributes of native plants. Japanese culture embraces the aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi, which cultivates an appreciation of the beauty in our naturally imperfect world, and it is this idea that influences my approach.  There is no symmetry here!

Designing gardens, native plants, local flora, art, ephemeral art, photography and design are all intertwined and related to the idea of  STUDIO174.   The DESIGN page features ephemeral art and photography projects that I have participated in, and gardens that I have been involved in designing or simply just gardens that I have visited that have had a significantl influence on my approach to gardening
